Instructions:

- Put the leaves back on the trees, keeping in mind that the leaves most exposed to the sun change color first

Hmm… I’ve got answers that make sense in the first two steps, but the third step is giving me gibberish.
I’m pretty much in the same place. I tried to get all meta with a six-letter author famous for “Trees” but that didn’t work.
Did you get TREES LILY ROOTS BEER MOSS HILT from the clues? Are those right? If those are wrong, then extracting the answer seems pretty hopeless. If those are right, then I feel like I’m missing something.
Ah, very clever and unfortunate that it works out that way.. but #3 and #4 are not what I had in mind. I kind of like yours better though!
And thinking about it now, I think my clue for #3 is a bit misleading when compared to #1. An edit may be in order!
I had TREES LILY LEAF TEA MOSS SADDLE which at least got the first three clues on the first line and the second three clues on the second line; but I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.
